Though you should have up-to-date antivirus software installed in your computer, no single antivirus software is able to maintain a 100% comprehensive virus database all the time. If you have any file that you want to be sure that it does not contain any virus, trojan, malware, etc., I would suggest that you have a look at VirusTotal.
VirusTotal is a free web application that allows you to upload a file and have it scanned with antivirus engines of over 39 different vendors, e.g. AVG Technologies, Symantec, McAfee, etc. Unless you have more than 39 antivirus softwares installed in your computer, I doubt you can perform a more comprehensive antivirus scan than VirusTotal.
To use VirusTotal, it is very easy. Simply visit the website and upload the file that you wish to scan. VirusTotal will scan the uploaded file and provide you a detail report from each antivirus engine. The time taken to scan the file depends on the size of your file and VirusTotal’s current service load.
Besides uploading your file through the website, you can also email your file to VirusTotal for scanning. Simply email your file (no larger than 20 MB) as an attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject “SCAN” and you will receive an email with the scan results.
You can also install the VirusTotal uploader, which is available for Windows that allows you to send files from your computer to VirusTotal directly.
Are you using any other antivirus alternatives? Please share them in the comments.
