Why should you renew your domain name a week before the expiry date

You spend time and money building an online presence for your brand. You make sure that the website is beautifully designed and optimized for search engines. You may have even paid for advertisements leading potential clients to your website.

But when your domain name is expiring, are you renewing it promptly?

In today’s news, Straits Times reported that Singapore citizens were unable to pay for all kinds of government services such as season parking tickets, passports, road tax, etc. on Tuesday because eNets went down for 11 hours.

What happened was that Nets failed to renew their domain name on time.

The company had to re-register its enets.sg Web address by midnight before it expired. But the renewal did not appear on a national registry of domain names until late Tuesday morning.

While domain name renewals are usually instantaneous, we should not assume that this is a given because domain name renewals areĀ dependentĀ on Domain Name Registrars. Most Domain Name Registrars send email notifications to their clients when their domain names are expiring within 30 days.

So how do you avoid repeating the same mistake as Nets?

Personally, I would suggest renewing your domain names the moment you receive an email notification from your Domain Name Registrar regarding the expiry of your domain name. For domain names that you will be retaining for years, consider renewing them for longer terms, around 2 to 5 years.
