Every AI marketing tool demo follows the same script. The vendor's best practitioner opens a clean, pre-loaded workspace, runs a carefully-chosen prompt on a topic they've tested dozens of times, and produces an output that's genuinely impressive. The room — or the Zoom call — responds accordingly.

The problem is that demos are designed to show the tool at its ceiling, not its floor. Real-world use looks like: a slightly ambiguous brief, content that doesn't fit neatly into the tool's sweet spot, a team member who isn't sure how to prompt effectively, and output that needs more editing than the demo suggested.

A demo shows you what's possible in ideal conditions. What you need to know is what's likely in your conditions.

The phrase "AI-powered" is particularly unreliable. It can mean anything from a genuine large language model integration to a rule-based system that uses the word AI in its marketing. Seeing a good demo tells you nothing about which category you're in.

Three Questions to Ask Before You Trial Anything

Before you commit to a two-week trial — and certainly before you sign up — run these three questions past your internal team.

  1. Does it fit an existing workflow, or require building a new one? The best AI tools slide into how your team already works. They replace a step or make a step faster. If adopting the tool requires building an entirely new process around it, your real cost isn't the subscription — it's the change management. That's almost always underestimated.
  2. Can I verify the output quality without being an expert? If the AI produces content, copy, or analysis that only a specialist can evaluate, your team will default to trusting it without checking — which is how errors and off-brand outputs end up published. The output should be verifiable by the person using it, not just the person who bought it.
  3. Who on my team will own this tool day-to-day — and do they want to? The biggest predictor of whether an AI tool gets used isn't its feature set. It's whether there's a specific person who owns it, understands it, and wants to use it. An AI tool adopted by a champion becomes a workflow asset. An AI tool adopted by a committee becomes shelfware.

How to Run a Meaningful Two-Week Trial

A proper trial isn't open-ended exploration. It's a structured test with a clear pass/fail condition. Here's how to make two weeks actually tell you something.

  1. Pick one real task you do every week: Not a synthetic test. Not a one-off project. A recurring task you already have to do — writing a weekly email, repurposing a podcast episode, generating ad variants. Run the trial against that specific task.
  2. Measure actual time saved against a baseline: Before the trial, time yourself doing the task the old way. During the trial, time yourself doing it with the AI tool. Net time saved — including prompt writing, editing, and review — is the only number that matters.
  3. Involve the sceptic on your team, not just the enthusiast: The enthusiast will find reasons to love it. The sceptic will find the friction points. You need both perspectives before you commit, but the sceptic's objections are the ones most likely to predict long-term adoption failure.
  4. Set your pass/fail criterion before you start: Decide in advance what "good enough" looks like. Is it saving two hours a week? Is it producing first drafts that require less than 20 minutes of editing? Write it down. Without a pre-set criterion, you'll rationalise toward whatever you're inclined to feel.

Red Flags in AI Marketing Tool Pitches

A few signals that should prompt more scrutiny before you trial or buy.

  • "You can do anything with it": Generalist positioning usually means the tool isn't optimised for anything in particular. For marketing tasks, a focused tool that does one thing well almost always outperforms an AI Swiss Army knife.
  • Demo uses the vendor's own content as examples: If the demo prompt is about a topic the vendor knows better than you do, ask them to run the same demo on content from your industry. The output quality gap is usually revealing.
  • Pricing for the features you need isn't clear: Vague pricing — "contact us for enterprise" or features locked behind tiers that aren't clearly explained — is a sign that the real cost will be higher than the headline number suggests. Get written clarity before you trial.
  • No native integrations with tools you already use: An AI marketing tool that sits outside your existing stack will be used occasionally, not consistently. Integration isn't a nice-to-have — it's the difference between a tool that changes behavior and one that gets forgotten.

The most useful question to ask at the end of any evaluation isn't "Is this the best AI tool for this job?" It's "Would my team still be using this in six months?" That's the question the trial is designed to answer.
